Some republicans tried to nominate MacArthur for the presidency in 1944, 1948, and 1952. In 1952 MacArthur became chairman of the board of Remington Rand, Inc. For the most part he lived in seclusion in New York City. MacArthur visited the Philippines in 1961. There, he was decorated with the Philippine Legion of honor. MacArthur also received the Sylvanus Thager Award in 1962 at West Point.

His memoirs were published shortly before he died on April 5, 1964. He was buried in a crypt of the MacArthur memorial in Norfolk, Virginia.
