The Korean war began on June 25, 1950. Truman appointed MacArthur head of the military force that was sent to defend South Korea. MacArthur led a surprise attack landing behind enemy lines at the South Korean part of Inchon.
This move changed the course of the war because of this, the U.N. forces captured Seoul. MacArthur then invaded North Korea. The American public welcomed MacArthur as a hero when he returned to the United States. This was his first time back in the country since 1937. MacArthur and Truman did not get along very well and disagreed about many things. MacArthur wanted to do stuff without the president's permission. Eventually, Truman got sick of him and fired him.
